Once a year, like clockwork, my birthday comes around. I can ask that you please not get me anything, but that particular wish is often not granted.
So here is a list of some items I could make some good use of:
- A grill scraper/brush to help keep the Weber clean!
- Six packs of just about anything except wheat-beer!
Just updated iTunes and updated my iPod Touch to the 2.0 firmware. A few things:
- Updating to 2.0 requires the iPod to be “wiped” of music/videos/photos. Not sure why, but I suppose that’s OK if you’ve got everything on your PC in iTunes anyway.
- Sync options seem better/easier to understand. Maybe I’m just more familiar with iTunes, but I suspect I’ll be more trusting of playlists & other sync features now.
- I’ve already purchased 3 iPhone applications, MLB “At Bat”, Enigmo (game), and of course, Monkey Ball! All look really good so far. The MLB app is pretty nice. It lists all games for the current day, but you can easly flick back one day or check out the next day’s schedule. For games that are in progress or already played, the UI gives quick access to video clips from the game. It all loads REALLY fast (over WiFi of course!).
Because so much to like about these updates demand a fast network connection, it should really drive both iPhone 3G sales AND iPod Touch WiFi “access”. By this I mean more and more people are going to be looking for hot-spots. In-car WiFi doesn’t sound so crazy.
What’s my real “want” at this point - a very cool UI’d Rhapsody client! No reason why this couldn’t work!
It’s a topic for another (many other?) posts, but Rhapsody is simply the coolest. I’m a believer in streamed media. And Rhapsody does it right.
Anyway, I’ve been “tuned” into the 70’s Hits channel now for an hour or two. Not unlike plain-old radio (only without commercials…), the streamed channels “mix it up”.
Here’s the playlist

Did my first real end-to-end update of Wordpress (now 2.6 Beta 2). Worked like a charm.
First step was to update my local WordPress repository via SVN. Took maybe 45 seconds.
Next, used my trusty FTP client (FTPVoyager, which I realized is now 6+ years old!) to do a full sync of my root/WordPress installation. That took a bit longer, maybe 10 minutes.
Ran the update script to update the MySQL databases and Voila! Done.
Gotta love it.
Setting up Drew’s WP installation next.
Most of the Ideals took a trip to South Carolina and the photos have been posted, and lovingly captioned, at our new photo sharing page on Shutterfly.
IdealHortons Photo Page.
Older albums are linked there too.
What is Cinepatnam? Who’s behind it? What kinds of movies are reviewed there? Soon all will be reveled.

Mow the lawn. Put in the screens.
I’m not a hardcore developer, but I can certainly appreciate nice software when I see it (and use it).
And SVN as a code and content management sysetm, and specifically TortoiseSVN as an SVN client, are pretty damn nice.
At work we use SVN to put some simple documents under source control using SVN. They way we us it is NOT providing use full document control, but it is really help ful to have the content in a single, accessible location and have a way of locking the files and knowing what has changed. And SVN is always backing up the files, so it is very easy to back-track to a previous version.
And TortoiseSVN is a great, simple to use client interface. It integrates into the Windows shell and gives “right-click” access to all SVN features.
I’ve just used SVN on my home machine to set up a check-out for WordPress, in an effort to keep it up-to-date.
You can find TortoiseSVN here.
Started getting lots of spam via this blog/page, so I updated the way-out-of-date WordPress underneath. Hopefully that will help. And with any luck I’ll get into posting again.
Some of you know the company I work for. Some of you know how strong my loathing for Apple is. So it may come as a surprise that I am now an iPod Touch owner.
What drove me to this madness?
- It’s a pretty cool device. Does lots of stuff, does it well.
- They’ve got some very good marketing going on. The “Product Tour” video they had posted on the Apple.com site was what really sold me.
- I’ve slowly gotten into using iTunes. And the iPods (of course) are a great match to iTunes.
- They were selling it from the Apple site with free shipping and free laser etching of your name, etc. on the back.
So I ordered one up and I got hot from China via FedEX.
So far I’ve loaded it up with tunes (some bought on iTunes, some RIP’d from my CD collection), some TV programming (kid stuff), and podcasts.
And so far I really like it. It is nice to have at home when the kids are on the computer (I can do quick lookups of things online via the Safari browser over WiFi. Also the YouTube feature is very entertaining.
And remember, iTunes gift-cards make great gifts!
